Symposium Updates
3rd National Symposium on Spanish as a Heritage Language
The Third Annual Symposium on Spanish as a Heritage Language (SSHL) will be held at the University of Oregon February 18th-20th, 2016. Professor Claudia Holguín Mendoza, Director of the UO’s Spanish as a Heritage Language Program, invites you to participate in this community-oriented academic meeting. Activities include panels with theoretical and pedagogical proposals, sharing of experiences teaching and learning Spanish as a Heritage Language, workshops by Oregon dual immersion high school educators, workshops on community outreach, and a Creative Writing Contest.
The Symposium on Spanish as a Heritage Language (SSHL) is an intellectual forum for the discussion of both the variable linguistic reality of Spanish heritage bilingualism in the United States (and elsewhere) and the diverse pedagogical needs of students of Spanish as a heritage language. Researchers and educators in K-12 and higher education share theoretical and practical approaches to the study of Spanish as a heritage language from the perspectives of various disciplines, including Second Language Acquisition, Sociolinguistics, Psycholinguistics, and Applied Linguistics, among others. The SSHL provides a space to bridge the gap between research findings and the praxis of heritage language teaching, allowing participants to collaborate effectively towards the implementation of pedagogies that allow heritage learners not only to develop their language proficiency but also to reflect on their own identity formation within a context of validation and empowerment.

III Simposio Nacional de Español como Lengua de Herencia
El Tercer Simposio de Español como Lengua de Herencia se llevará a cabo en la Universidad de Oregón entre el 18 y el 20 de febrero del 2016. La Profesora Claudia Holguín Mendoza, Directora del Programa de Español como Lengua de Herencia en la UO, le invita cordialmente a participar en este evento académico de orientación comunitaria. Entre las actividades del simposio se cuentan: paneles con propuestas teóricas y pedagógicas, experiencias sobre la enseñanza y el aprendizaje del español como lengua de herencia, talleres impartidos por educadores de escuelas secundarias de doble inmersión en Oregón, talleres sobre concientización en la comunidad, y el Concurso de Escritura Creativa.
El Simposio de Español como Lengua de Herencia es un foro intelectual para discutir la variable realidad lingüística del bilingüismo español-inglés en Estados Unidos (y en otros lugares), además de las diversas necesidades pedagógicas de estudiantes hablantes de español como lengua de herencia. Investigadores y educadores de K12 y educación superior tendrán la oportunidad de compartir enfoques teóricos y prácticos al estudio del español como lengua de herencia desde la perspectiva de diferentes disciplinas, como la adquisición de segundas lenguas, la sociolingüística, la psicolingüística y la lingüística aplicada, entre otras. Este Simposio busca disminuir la brecha entre los resultados de investigación y la praxis de la enseñanza del español como lengua de herencia y así fomentar nuestra colaboración en la aplicación de pedagogías que permiten a los estudiantes hablantes de español como lengua de herencia no sólo desarrollar su competencia lingüística, sino también reflexionar sobre su propia formación de identidad en un contexto de validación y empoderamiento.
